Social Media & Job Search
Social media is an important element of your career and job search. When recruiting to fill roles in hotels and pubs, owners and managers often use social media to find and screen new staff and share key messages about their organisation.
They will likely search your social media history, to help decide if you’re a ‘good fit’ for their operation.
Remember, what you post online should be considered public and permanent. Be careful only to post messages online that you would share in person and be respectful of others’ opinions.
Creating a LinkedIn Profile
A strong LinkedIn profile can be a great way to connect you to potential employers across the hospitality industry.
They will post job vacancies and use LinkedIn to ‘check you out’ prior to creating a short list and organising job interviews. Keep your profile professional, concise and up to date!
Building a strong LinkedIn Profile
- Include a discreet photo – a simple head shot is enough. Ditch the family shot or a photo of you out with friends!
- Create a solid profile summary – a three/four-line summary of your professional career, for example, Recent finance graduate, Experienced concierge or Qualified chef (of course, relative to your area of expertise).
- Your Experience – concentrate on the last two/three key roles you have held. If you have held more than one role with the same company, separate the roles to show progression.
- Make sure your Linkedin details match your resume – same job titles and dates. Inconsistency often makes the reader suspicious! Make sure you update your details regularly too!
- Skills and expertise – remember to highlight your strengths and don’t exaggerate. Look for opportunities to emphasise transferable skills that most align to the roles you will be applying for. Establish key words around your skills – this can help recruiters find you.
- Recommendations – ask those you have worked with if they will recommend you. This can be a very powerful tool in a job search.
- Groups – Join or follow some professional groups you can belong to online, that will help build your industry profile.
